Welcome to my 1st great nephew! Ankle Update

I am a new great aunt again. Niece and L are doing good. He was born yesterday and weighs in at a whopping 8 pounds 2 ounces and is 19.5 inches long.

In other news....I am in an air cast and ace bandages until surgery. I will be having an ankle arthroscopy to clean up the joint which is full of scar tissue and the syndesmotic surgery with the tight rope procedure to keep my tibia and fibula together as they should be (only half the ligaments have healed). Then the surgeon will open up my ankle on the inside of the foot and repair the post tibial tendon, then open up my ankle on the outside of the foot and probably use the cadaver ligament and make me an new ATF ligament. Hopefully I will be able to stand and walk again after it is all done. We are leaving the damaged and irritated seral nerve alone right now and see if it calms down in the next year. It is the one that is causing the hot poker type pain I have that travels to the knee. I find out when surgery will be by Tuesday.

Off now to go get ready for the fancy smancy dinner dance. I will post pics tomorrow.

Mish Mosh

This post is a wee bit of this and a wee bit of that....aka mish mosh.

Wedding update: we are in the process of trimming the 'A' guest list from the current count of 365 to a number where only 200 will show up. I suggested my name was the first to go and got the eyeroll. My current instructions are to be out of the cast and walking by May for the wedding. She is not allowing either my scooter or wheelchair to be a part of the ceremony.

Wedding prep: Yanno those things that we have planned to do on the house, etc:
Roof is picked out finally after multiple viewings and discussions. We decided on GAF's Timberline 40 Pewter Gray Blend Shadow Accent. Believe me, it was a whole lot of discussion. Why we picked a 40 year roof is beyond me as I can't imagine caring at the ripe age of 93 about putting a new roof on the house. New skylight will be in within 2 weeks so roof will go on then.
Landscaper came out today and gave us the new plan. We are removing 2 trees that were supposed to stay small yet became monsters, replanting some bushes and flowers and stuff I have no idea what their names are but managed to look like I knew what he was saying and cared. All I care about is the price and there isn't a lily being planted and it is maintenance free (aka I don't have to do it) and looks good. Must be a man thang because hubs came home from golf and the landscaper looked relieved that he didn't have to talk to me anymore. He and hubs decided to put in a stone decorative wall on both sides of the house and lots of other things that added a couple thousand to the bill but still within what I was expecting and have the money for so for convenience sake I gave in on that (but it was to get my way for the kitchen which I will remind him of when I need to).
Inside house: 1. The basement that we had the water damage in is cleaned out and I have had 2 bids so far on the refinishing. Need to pick them out soon but work won't start until January which is considered off season and thus cheaper.
2. I picked out the hardwood flooring I want in the bedrooms which is still up for discussion as hubs wants carpeting (warmer for his piggies...to which I responded put on socks and wear slippers).
3. We are still discussing the new mattress we are getting for our bedroom. Hubs wants to try a sleep number bed thang. I said his side would be very soft and mine would be very hard and we won't ever be able to meet in the middle (which might be ok). Sealy has my vote. It hasn't failed me for 30 years. Our old mattress is going into spare room aka daughter's old room where sugar glider currently resides.
4. Kitchen.....very big sore subject (which I hope to win on since I let hubs get his decorative stone thang outside). I currently have a U shaped kitchen with a large island with cabinets above and below and a breakfast room right next to it. I would love to take out the island and table and put in a huge island in the center of the 2 rooms that has seating with it. It would open up the kitchen area and blend right on through to the family room. We put french doors in the breakfast room a few years ago and to me, this huge island would just open up the whole area. I think we should do it while we are changing countertops anyway. I am currently being vetoed. We shall see. The other topic is the countertops. I picked out my new cooktop already but the discussion is on type and style and color of the countertops. I want a grey granite with black specks with back splashes to the bottom of the cabinets and stainless sinks. He wants something else and says granite backsplashes are ugly. House remodeling reminds me of building this house 22 years ago. I swore I would never do it again.
5. I picked out the paint colors for the hallways (upstairs and downstairs and stairs) and am going with a metallic faux finish in shades of gray and rose with silver as the metallic finish. It gives the walls definition and shine without being gaudy. Just going to have to get the 2 layers of wallpaper off first.

Foot/Ankle: I promised a few people a pic of my neon pink cast which I have been sporting for 2 weeks now. Last Friday I had another MRI which confirmed that while some things have healed, the others are not going to. So surgery is being scheduled. I find out when and what on Friday. I have a formal dinner dance to attend Saturday. I am going to ask for a black cast which would be appropiate for Halloween and would blend in with what I think I am wearing on Saturday. I still haven't made up my mind on that dilemma yet.

Other than that, celebrating that son drove to Phoenix and back in one piece and without a ticket, etc. Now I can breathe again instead of worrying about him on the road. He and a friend drove it straight through. Said it was easier than the drive to the Keys. He loves it in Phoenix. His allergies didn't act up at all until he got home. He got used to the 80+ degree weather in Phoenix and came home to the Chicago 40's and 50's. He dug out all his winter clothes and is going around saying he's freezing....so the battle of the thermostat is starting. Years ago I disconnected the thermostat and put another in (I call it the dummy one) so he can change it all he wants....it won't change off the 64 degree setting I have it on. Maybe one year he will catch on it is a dummy thermostat. But then again........

Dilemma

I have one. According to the dictionary a dilemma is a problem offering 2 solutions or possibilities, of which neither is acceptable.

Next Saturday I have a black tie dinner dance aka fancy smancy doctor's dinner dance to attend. It is to be held at the Museum of Science and Industry. Normally every year they are held at a local hotel and we make a weekend of it. We stay overnight and get couple massages, etc. This year they decided to have it at the Museum. Normally I wouldn't mind. This year I do. I have my ankle to worry about.

I had my 2nd MRI yesterday but don't get the official results until next Friday (the day before said dance). Of course hubs and I both read MRI's and know what it says. I know that the doc will be taking off the cast next week but I also know he will be putting another on until surgery.

So what to wear when one is sporting a cast...plus how to attend. If I use the scooter, I have to wear pants and personally I don't think said scooter meets the definition of fancy smancy attire..plus I would have to try to go shopping for said pair of pants since I have dropped 2 sizes and not one of my dressy pants fit over my cast. If I go via wheelchair, then I am dependant on someone pushing me....I don't have to get something to wear as I will wear something out of my closet BUT I will have to rent a wheelchair for the weekend and personally I hate being in the wheelchair.

So neither option is sitting well with me. But then again I could wear my bright purple dress with my thigh high on one leg and get the doc to put on a neon green cast on the other and go in the scooter just to snub my nose at this type of society stuff that is just not me.

So it's a week before and I am still stewing on what to do and what to wear and to use the wheelchair or the scooter. And as you can see I am in a funk. I am tired of being in a cast (it's been almost 10 weeks). I am tired of being in pain (especially the past week or so with the changing Chicago weather). I am tired of not getting better or being able to see an end to this. **insert major drama rant**

The things we learn from TV: cliterature

I rarely watch TV. I just don't have the time. I have a few shows I TiVo and once in a while I actually watch what I have taped. My favorites: ER, Gray's Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Numbers, Men in Trees, and Boston Legal. I think I have finally caught up to the end of last season's shows and am now starting on this season that I have taped so far.

Yesterday I happened to have the TV on while I was getting ready for work. I wasn't really listening to it....I call it background noise. That is until I heard the word: cliterature. New word for me. Interesting discussion and on Oprah! Well, I had missed a lot of it so here in the Chicago area, Oprah is on twice a day...9AM and 11PM so I set up TiVo to record the 11PM show.

I just got through watching it. The show was on menopause of which I am on intimate terms with that word. I have been living with that word since my hysterectomy 9 years ago for uterine cancer. I am in what is called a surgical menopause which basically means I went into menopause abruptly through surgery. Since my cancer was hormone related, I was not allowed to use any hormone therapy for over 5 years. How my husband lived with me I have no idea...imagine PMS personified! I had no sexual feelings....someone could wag their wand in front of me and I would look then look away and just go about doing what I was doing...it was like a 'so what'. Not good for a relationship. So I did some research on hormone therapy and learned about natural hormones which I am now taking although not in the same amount my body would have been normally producing. I take the edge off the hot flashes and over time I have learned how to have a sex life again.

Ok back to Oprah and cliterature. There was a doctor on the show that explained that romance novels are cliterature. They are designed to stimulate the senses and she strongly encourages women to read them to become aroused. She called them cliterature. I was like...huh? I will stand right up right now and admit, I am an reader and yes, I even read romance novels aka to her cliterature. I read a variety of things...contemporaries, medical thrillers, action romance, and yes I like erotica. I don't need a happy ever after like old Harlequins but I do like a well written book and definitely not cheesey or corney. I am lucky enough to have a few friends who are all established authors whose writing I love.

But to call them cliterature? I think that is going way too far. I can only imagine what they call medical thrillers like The Hot Zone by Richard Preston. I just finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (fantastic book I highly recommend) and I wonder what it would be called.

Back to that word: cliterature. So I got to thinking....interesting word....cliterature. I wanted to see the real definition rather than her definition. Imagine my surprise! Urban Dictionary defines it as this: An amalgamation of clit and literature. Literature dealing with the clitoris, that is, pornography.........wait....this doctor termed romance novels pornography? Wow....how far we have come at times and how archaic we still are.

So I read cliterature. Who knew?

Taste Testing

Last night after work hubs and I met daughter, her fiancee, and his mother and father for a taste testing for the reception. OMG the culinary delights.

We started with a choice of either soup (minestrone, Orecchiette con Fagioli or the chef's soup of the day which was Cream of Broccoli) or salad. We decided on offering either a choice of Minestrone or salad.

Next we had to pick the pasta. We had bowtie pasta with a vodka cream sauce and then homemade cheese tortellini in a pomodoro and basil sauce. We all agreed on the vodka cream sauce but couldn't decide on bowtie pasta or rigatoni or the cheese tortellini.

The next course was the main course. We knew we were having filet and chicken but we had yet to pick out which chicken so they brought out 2 12 ounce Filet Mignons, Chicken Vesuvio, Chicken Marsala, and Chicken Francese so we could have both a slice of the filet on our plate with each of the chickens to get the flavor of how both would be presented. We loved all of them and the vote was split 3 ways.

We also had to pick out our potatoe from these: Twice Baked Potato, Oven Roasted Potato, Vesuvio Potatoes, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Crocka D'Potato, and Italian Potatoes. We are between the twice baked, the vesuvio if we have the chicken vesuvio, or the Crocka D'Potato.

Oh and one can't forget the vegetable choices: Steamed Broccoli, Asparagus, Green Beans Almandine, Sauteed Spinach, and a Garden Fresh Medley of Broccoli, Cauliflower and Carrots. I think we are going with the green beans almandine as they gave the best presentation on a plate.

The owner of the reception place came over to see us (he knows us) and said we couldn't leave without dessert so he brought out Lemoncello Gelato, Tiramisu, and Cannoli's. I had never had lemoncello gelato before so I had that.....melted in the mouth.........truly orgasmic!

The whole dinner for 6 was a part of the reception program so all we had to pay for was the 2 bottles of wine we drank (well, I had water).

OMG I was so full and we still can't decide. We might just have to go back to pick one pasta and one chicken and one potato and one vegetable and do some sampling all over again. Hard decisions here.......

Dreams

I had the weirdest strangest dream last night and I had to tell you all about it to see if someone can help me interpret it. According to a website called "An Online Guide to Dream Intrepretation", the rules of reality do not apply to the world of dreams and said dream "unifies the body, mind, and spirit". Umm...yeah...kinda scarey!

Now I usually don't dream or remember my dreams. I am usually so tuckered out by the time I go to bed that I am a log. My head hits the pillow and I am out. The next thing I remember is the alarm going off. I have had to stop reading when I go to bed because I fall asleep so fast anymore that I leave my glasses on all night. I learned that to try to see out of twisted glasses is not good in the am, let alone deal with the cast! On to the dream:

I dreamt that hubs and a friend of his, daughter and I, and a wiener dog were all going from wedding reception to wedding reception place looking for the best one for my daughter. The corker: instead of visiting said places during the day, we visited them during actual weddings. I don't remember my attire but I do remember some of the attire worn by some of the wedding attendees (all the way from black tie and glittery dresses to overalls and tennis shoes). There were at least 5 different weddings going on at each place. Daughter, wiener dog, and I would visit each wedding and talk to the people attending and the guide who was telling us what they could do for us. Hubs and his friend were going from wedding to wedding sampling the food. Wiener dog was having fun and in fact at one point we lost him and had to go find him. Once we found him dancing in the middle of a circle of people and the center of attention. Another time he was lying in the middle of the lawn not wanting to move. That's all I remember.

Ok, #1: I would never ever own a wiener dog although my niece and grandniece do. Hubs and I did get a call yesterday to see if we wanted a 4 month old English Bulldog male puppy and we said no.

As for daughter's reception, we never looked at any other place than the one she is having hers at because we know the owner and love the place he and his sons built. It also has special meaning because the owner used to have an Italian restaurant we inhabited a lot when the kids were growing up. They had this scrumptious Italian family feast on Sundays...all you could eat and the kids were free. Also we knew what was out there because we attend weddings of either our kids friends or friend's children's weddings and our banquet place beats them hands down for authentic Italian food.

So what does my dream mean other than I am nuts, weird, and strange? And what does wiener dog have to do with any of it?
